Conference Deltas in Times of Climate Change II Sept 24-26, 2014 Starting on Sept 24: As more knowledge is gained, climate adaptation strategies have been developed and measures taken. Yet a great deal remains to be done. How can risk analysis be improved? Which measures are most effective? How should they be best financed and implemented? Which stakeholders should be involved? These topics and many more will be discussed in a lively setting during the conference in 2014, Deltas in Times of Climate Change II. Delta Alliance is contributing to this conference

Towards a Comprehensive Framework for Adaptive Delta Management This report provides an overview of new approaches emerging in several deltas that can be labelled under the heading of Adaptive Delta Management (ADM). Adaptive management can be defined as a structured, iterative process of robust decision making in the face of uncertainty, with an aim to reduce uncertainty over time via system monitoring. ADM encourages an integrated and flexible approach to land and water management with the aim to reduce vulnerability and limit the risk of over- or underinvestment in future challenges such as flood risk management and freshwater supplies. The report shows that ADM is developing rapidly into a fascinating new type of decision making under an uncertain future. The reasons for using the new approach are convincing, the theoretical foundation is growing and the results on the ground are promising. ADM can be captured as a cyclic process of which the overall design does not differ much from traditional planning steps. However, the approach and methods within each step contain new elements, such as long term scenario building, adaptation pathway developments, signposts and triggers.

Netherlands Burma Water Management Cooperation to Address Challenges, Boost Trade Burma and the Netherlands resumed water management cooperation in 2013 after a hiatus of some 25 years. During a recent visit by the Dutch minister of infrastructure and transport, both sides expanded the cooperation and revealed plans for a joint US$20 million pilot project to improve use of the Irrawaddy River. Wim van Driel from the Delta Alliance was interviewed for this article.

Shrinking and Sinking Deltas: Major role of Dams in delta subsidence and Effective Sea Level Rise Studies and reports from the ground are warning us that most of the deltas around the world are shrinking due to catastrophic sea level rise. And not all the blame can be put on climate change. According to several independent scientific studies, the major reason behind this effective sea level rise is delta subsidence. The major reason behind this is sediment trapping by the dams built on the upstream rivers, which are starving deltas of sediment and result in oceans eroding and literally devouring precious deltas. Download the report.

Reactive versus anticipative adaptive management of Deltas; The Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the Rhine-Meuse Delta compared In this paper Californian Adaptive Management (AM) and Dutch Adaptive Delta Management (ADM) are compared. The concepts are introduced in a policy context to deal with prevailing types of uncertainty in water management in the Californian Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta and the Dutch Rhine-Meuse Delta respectively.
