Food Systems in deltas
Deltas are important contributors to food production and delivery of other environmental services. At the same time, they are particularly vulnerable, amongst others to the effects of climate change. Typical stresses for deltas are: salinity, acidity, and related pests and plant diseases, flooding/waterlogging and drought, and subsidence.
The production of food, combined with the food supply until consumption, together leads to food security in the sense of availability, accessibility and utilization of food. Together this is called the food system (van Berkum et al, 2018).
When food production and consumption is changing over time, due to population growth, climate change, development or other socio economical and environmental drivers, new food systems will emerge. The sustainability of food systems in deltas is a current topic of research, amongst others at Wageningen University and Research.
