Background
Compared to other continents, Africa is developing at a tremendous rate, especially in its deltas where growing challenges from urbanisation, industrialisation, mechanised agriculture, and climate change, determine more and more the development of the catchment and communities.

The Delta Alliance is an international knowledge-driven network organisation that promotes and facilitates delta networks (wings) in Africa and beyond. In May 2017 in Cotonou, Benin, at an interregional delta gathering the African Delta wings from Egypt, Mozambique, Ghana, Kenya and Benin expressed their interest in developing an African Delta Knowledge Exchange network to support exchange of knowledge and success practices and to enable peer-to-peer learning between African deltas to increase the resilience of delta regions in Africa.

The main objective of the Delta Alliance side event is to discuss the mission, objectives and approach of the Delta Alliance African Wings (Kenya, Ghana and Egypt) and candidate Wing (Benin) as well as representatives from other delta regions and networks in Africa and a wider group of stakeholders in delta planning and management.

Goal of the meeting

  • Extending the approach of establishing an African-wide Deltas Alliance Network
  • Adopt mission, objectives and approach with a wider group of stakeholders and experts in delta planning and management
  • Updating the Africa Delta Alliance Network with relevant stakeholders, partners and donors
  • Finalising a step-by-step practice towards the launch of this network
