Report ESPA Deltas Project Final Conference: Sustainable Development Goals in Deltas (22-23 November 2016)
The goal of the project is to provide policy makers with the knowledge and tools to enable them to evaluate the effects of policy decisions on ecosystem services and people’s livelihoods in coastal Bangladesh. Key findings include the development of a model on future poverty/ecosystem services based on climate change (Delta DIEM). It was found e.g. that about one third of the poor do not have access to ecosystem services. It was also found that development parameters (road connectivity) are more important than climate change. The coastal fringe appears to contain the poorest people reflecting a combination of high salinity, higher exposure to combined impact of riverine and coastal floods and lower access to economic assets such as towns, road networks.Renske Peters, Executive Director of the Delta Alliance, gave a presentation of management of the populated and developed delta in the Netherlands. She also addressed deltas in the urban agenda and the way in which the Delta Alliance supports and promotes knowledge development and sharing in 17 deltas worldwide. As a follow up the Delta Alliance will provide a short report on its website, make the information available to interested members/wings, and present a follow up with the principal investigator, Robert Nichols, of Southamptom University, on possible collaboration in the future.
