Delta Alliance officially launched - Delta Alliance declaration signed

Representatives from six delta countries signed the Delta Alliance declaration during a ceremony at the conference ‘Deltas in Times of Climate Change’ in Rotterdam on 30 Sept 2010. The declaration is a statement on the value of the world’s deltas and the importance of international cooperation for improving their resilience. The signing ceremony symbolized also the official launch of Delta Alliance and the start of international cooperation towards resilient deltas.

Representatives from Egypt, Indonesia, The Netherlands, USA and Vietnam spoke about the challenges and opportunities for their deltas and how they may learn from one another. Minister Tineke Huizinga of The Netherlands kicked-off the signing of the Delta Alliance declaration (read her speech), and was followed by Governor Fauzi Bowo of Jakarta, Deputy Minister Hussein El Atfy of Egypt, Prof. Le Quang Minh of Vietnam National University, Dr. Wenwei Ren of WWF China, Mr. Will Travis of the San Francisco Bay Conservation and Development Commission, and Mr. Kees Slingerland, chairman of Delta Alliance.

Conference participants were invited to sign the declaration during the reception following the ceremony, and individuals can now sign the declaration online to voice their support for the goal of increased international cooperation towards resilient deltas, and to become members of the emerging Delta Alliance network.

The Deltas in Times of Climate Change conference was held at the World Trade Centre in Rotterdam 29 Sep – 1 Oct 2010, and offered a wealth of sessions for scientists, practitioners and policy makers. Delta Alliance hosted several sessions throughout the conference to support the development of the international Delta Alliance network and its activities for the coming years.
