With Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing as a partnership to share knowledge, we can do more

Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing organized on 30th of November 2013 a well-attended workshop on 'Knowledge Sharing for Delta Management in a Changing Climate'. About 70 people attended the workshop, while another 170 people followed the live streamed meeting through internet.

Three experts presented state of the art knowledge about complex cases in land and water management:

  • Salinity Intrusion and Polder Water Management in Coastal Delta, by Zahirul Haque Khan - Director Coast, Port and Estuaries of the Institute of Water Modelling
  • Planning of Climate Resilient Coastal Infrastructure, by Sarafat Hossain Khan - Project Co-ordinator, Coastal Embankment Implementation Project, Bangladesh Water Development Board
  • Evolution of the rivers in the Subsiding Sylhet Basin - by Dr Maminul Haque Sarker - Deputy Executive Director, Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services

An interesting discussion followed, in which the audience highlighted the need for broad knowledge sharing, including e.g. institutional capacity, agriculture, fisheries and socio-economic issues. The wish to know more about the upcoming Bangladesh Delta Plan 2100 formulation was clearly voiced - and the absence of the speaker on this subject, due to unforeseen circumstances, was sincerely regretted. Further the audience requested translation of all scientific knowledge to development plan and works and to do more investigations for finding recommendable results. All participants showed interest to work in partnership integrating multi-disciplinary experience and expertise. Suggestions also came to work on joint research project involving other Delta Wings.

The representative of the Netherlands Embassy lauded the initiative to share knowledge on delta issues, in a wider sense than with the traditional water sector only. He encouraged to widen the Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing initiative and include NGO and business partners as well, and maintained that based on among others the similarities between Bangladesh and the Netherlands, the work together will continue to be supported from the Dutch side.

The Chief Guest in his address lauded the initiative of IWM and partners in the Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing to organize the meeting. He recommended active knowledge sharing and technology transfer within the country and with international partners, for a comprehensive approach for planning and implementation of delta management.

The Chair of the Delta Alliance Bangladesh Wing, Prof Monowar Hossain, Executive Director of the Institute of Modelling, thanked all present for their contributions, and encouraged further networking. All interested can link with the Wing and actively participate in further joint activities.
