To protect infrastructure and economic activity from an anticipated centennial flood, barriers will be built along the banks of the River Vils and near the Castnerstrasse.

Dykes will be erected in front of the castle, the Kultur-Schloss Theuern, and a pumping station will be built next to the nearby bridge over the Vils.

Excavation work along the river was carried out during the first stage of the project and completed in the autumn of 2019.

The second stage, which is construction of a protection line west of the Vils, is underway and expected be completed in 2021. This phase is expected to cost around EUR 2 million, excluding the cost of machinery.

Flood protection barriers will be built along the Vilstalstrasse in the third and final phase, which is still in planning.

The Kümmersbruck municipality is contributing 35 % of the total project cost. The project is co-financed by the OP Bayern ERDF 2014-2020.
